We spoke to one of our designers, Natalie about her favourite luxury eco hotel – The Scarlet, in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall. The Scarlet is Cornwall’s finest eco, adults-only hotel. The hotel embraces its stunning situation overlooking the North Cornish Coastline, having been built to the highest eco standards.
It offers delicious, locally sourced food and a unique Ayurvedic inspired Spa experience, focusing on holistic wellbeing and the nourishment of the mind, body and soul.
The Scarlet sits nestled into the undulating curves of this magnificent Cornish coastline; its impressive contemporary design features towering glass walls that blur the boundary between indoors and out. The fresh sea air and the whisps of the ocean waves stretch as far as the eye can see, transporting you to another place in time.
With no mobile phone reception and an ultra-green ethos (recycled water, sustainable wood), this hotel offers you a rich experience of luxury without a need for overconsumption – here you celebrate the simple joys in life lifted to exquisite heights.
The Scarlet invites its guests to feel completely at home, “Think of being cared for like you would be in the house of a friend”, where food is served anytime, anywhere and there is no reception desk (staff just appear out of nowhere to help).
You can soak in the clifftop hot tubs, swim in the luxurious indoor pool, explore the beautiful meadow gardens and enjoy a cooling plunge in the outdoor rockpool (reed-filtered and completely natural) – perfect after the steam room or hot tub.
And of course, there is the formidable Spa and its luxury tented treatment rooms lit by lanterns – where the gifted therapists intuitively remove all your stress and take you on an individually tailored Ayurvedic journey.
Follow this by curling up into one of The Deep Relaxation Room’s cushion-filled canvas pods hung from the ceiling and watch yourself drift away into blissful state of relaxation. Then, when you’re ready to greet the world again, head to the The Light Relaxation Room and take in the panoramic views over the natural pool to the sea beyond…
And we simply must mention the cuisine. With a passion for serving the freshest, locally-sourced food, at the Scarlet you will sample delectable modern cuisine with the finest organic ingredients from Cornish farmers, fishermen and growers who are committed to sustainability. You can choose to eat where you like; leisurely around the pool, on the terrace or a sunset supper in the main restaurant.
Let’s hear what our our designer Natalie had to say about the Scarlet…
How did you find out about The Scarlet?
‘I found out about the Scarlet when searching online for a hotel in the area. As I saw it was rated one of the top 20 best hotels in the UK, I decided to give it a try.’
How many times have you visited The Scarlet?
‘A couple… 12 times in the last 4 years!’.
What do you think is so special about this hotel?
‘There is just something about it, the atmosphere is so serene and relaxing, you just walk in and go ‘ahhhh’. The rooms are so beautifully laid out; the décor is simply faultless. The rooms overlook the beach and stunning clifftops. There is a really nice bar area, and the spa facilities are second to none. Oh, and there is no gym, which is perfect!’
Have you had any spa treatments, if so can you recommend?
‘I cannot fault any of the spa treatments, they are all fabulous. My favourites are the Hot Poultice massage for deep tension release and the Honest facial. In the Honest facial they cover your skin in a raw cucumber mask, your skin will be glowing afterwards! After your spa treatment you can curl up in a little cocooned pod and relax.’
Can you recommend a particular dish at The Scarlet restaurant? What was your favourite meal?
‘All of the food is beautiful, the chef, Tom Hunter is outstanding. The fish is particularly good, being locally caught, it always tastes really fresh. I’d recommend the scallops to start, the sea bass for your main course, and the dark chocolate marquise for dessert.’
What is there to do in the surrounding area?
‘Surrounded by beaches and clifftops, it is perfect for walking. Watergate Bay, Padstow and Port Isaac are all lovely places to explore close by. Nathan Outlaw’s 2 star Michelin restaurant in Port Isaac is definitely worth a visit.’
